The British Prime minister has called a general election for July 4
British Prime Minister Sunak announced on the 22nd local time that the UK will hold a general election on July 4.
Speaking in front of 10 Downing Street in London on the same day, Sunak said that he had spoken with British King Charles III earlier in the day to ask for the dissolution of parliament. The king has granted the request.
In his speech, Sunak was "proud" of his achievements in the economy, immigration, education and other areas since taking office, and said the ruling Conservative party had a clear plan for the future.
The Conservative Party has been in power in Britain since 2010, when then-leader David Cameron led the party to an election victory. Opinion polls show the opposition Labour Party has maintained a double-digit lead over the Conservatives since Sunak came to power in October 2022. The latest YouGov poll showed that as of April 16, the Conservative Party's support rate was only 20%, while the Labour Party's support rate was 47%. The Labor Party and other parties are pressing Sunak to call a general election as soon as possible.
