After the resumption of diplomatic ties, the President of Nauru paid his first visit to China
Wu Ming, Special Correspondent for the Global Times: President David Adiang of the Republic of Nauru paid a state visit to China from March 24 to 29. Adiang arrived in Beijing by plane at noon on the 24th, which is the first visit to China by a Nauru president since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru on January 24. China is willing to work with Nauru to take the visit as an opportunity to consolidate political mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, deepen people-to-people friendship and push forward bilateral relations, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian on Monday.
After the Chinese side announced the news of the Nauru President's visit to China, Taiwan's United News Network, China Times News Network and other media on the island reported the news. The United News Network mentioned in the report that two days after the completion of the local leadership election in Taiwan at the beginning of this year, Nauru announced on January 15 that it had "severed diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities. On January 24, China and Nauru signed a communique on the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru, and resumed diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level with immediate effect. Agence France-Presse reported on the 22nd that Nauru's president's upcoming visit to China said that Nauru's decision was seen as a big victory for Beijing and a blow to Taiwan.
Chen Hong, executive director of the Asia-Pacific Research Center of East China Normal University, told the Global Times on the 24th that the Nauru president's visit has both political significance and economic cooperation significance. On the one hand, after the resumption of diplomatic relations, the two countries need to know each other's demands and perceptions of hotspot issues after a period of understanding. This visit by the Nauru President will lay a solid foundation for the two sides to build political mutual trust and provide a very good opportunity for more substantive cooperation in the future. On the other hand, the deepening cooperation between other Pacific island countries and China has brought tangible benefits to the local people and set an example for China-Naua cooperation. After the resumption of diplomatic relations, the President of Nauru paid his first visit to China, which reflected the strong desire of the Nauru side to further deepen and implement the cooperation between the two countries as soon as possible.
Chen Hong believes that the Nauru president's visit to China also gives a reminder to the few remaining "diplomatic Allies" of Taiwan, hoping that they will eventually be able to resist domestic and foreign interference and make the right choice.
